The City of Columbia, through its Columbia Streams Art public art program, partnered with Columbiana Centre to commission a largescale mural that captures the skyline and spirit of the capital city. The project reflects a shared investment in local talent and transforms the center’s most visited gathering place into a celebration of community identity.

The two-part installation created by Columbia-based artist Ija Monet, spans 235 feet in total length and rises nine feet high, wrapping around the vaulted upper walls above the mall’s food court. The mural transforms one of the center’s most visited gathering spaces into a vibrant tribute to Columbia’s landmarks, culture and everyday life.

One 127-foot section presents a dynamic interpretation of Columbia’s skyline, incorporating recognizable buildings, colleges and universities and architectural icons that define the city’s silhouette. The adjoining section shifts from structures to stories, highlighting the bridges, fountains, recreation and cultural activities that animate Columbia’s neighborhoods and public spaces.

Together, the panels reflect not only where Columbia stands, but how it lives.

“I wanted to include all of the landmarks that make Columbia so wonderful and make sure to show everything Columbia has to offer,” said Monet. “This city has so much

personality and pride, and I wanted that to shine through.”

“Public art helps tell Columbia’s story and brings our communities together,” said Mayor Daniel Rickenmann. “This mural celebrates what makes our city special and highlights the incredible talent we have right here at home. Supporting local artists strengthens civic pride and transforms shared spaces into places of connection.”

“Columbiana Centre serves as a gathering place for the Columbia community,” said Mitchell, Whitting, general manager of Columbiana Centre. “Partnering with the City to showcase a mural by a local artist reflects our commitment to celebrating the creativity, culture and pride that define this region.” About the Artist
