Columbia Urban League celebrates successful Backto-School Drive-Thru event

The Columbia Urban League is proud to share the success of its Back-to-School Drive-Thru event, held on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at 2805 North Main St., Columbia, SC.

Nearly 200 bookbags filled with essential school supplies were distributed to students and families, helping them prepare for a strong start to the school year.

The event was sponsored by Walmart. Special thanks were given to the Columbia Urban League staff and young professionals for their dedicated volunteer service, and to the officers who came out to support the event and engage with the community. Local McDonald’s restaurants generously provided breakfast for the volunteers.

“This event shows the power of community,” said J.T. McLawhorn, President and CEO of the Columbia Urban League. “It truly takes a village to uplift our youth and prepare them for success. We are proud to work alongside dedicated partners and volunteers who believe in investing in the next generation.”

The Columbia Urban League remains committed in its mission to empower families and strengthen communities through service, advocacy, and opportunity.
