Columbia Urban League addresses senior food insecurity through Annual Christmas Giving Project

The Columbia Urban League continued its commitment to addressing food insecurity among seniors through its annual Christmas Giving Project. South Carolina’s senior hunger rate is 1 0. 4 % compared to the national average of 7. 1 % , according to Feeding America: The State of Senior Hunger in 2021. South Carolina is among the top ten states with the highest prevalence.

On Saturday, Dec. 20, 2025, CUL distributed 300 Christmas food boxes to pre-approved seniors and families facing food insecurity, along with snack packs for households with children at W.A. Perry Middle School.

In addition to food box distribution, the Columbia Urban League staff and volunteers delivered hot, prepared meals to other elderly residents.

Among the volunteers was professional wrestler and Columbia native Trick Williams.

The Columbia Urban League’s annual Christmas Giving project honors the organization’s legacy of service and advocacy for underserved populations, particularly seniors living on fixed incomes.

Historically, the Columbia Urban League has provided Christmas food baskets and meals to underserved families, ensuring dignity, nourishment, and community care during the holiday season.

“We all share a responsibility to support our elderly community, individuals who have contributed so much to our society over the years,” President and CEO James T. McLawhorn, Jr. said. “The elderly have been, and continue to be, the foundation of family stability in our community.”

“The Christmas Giving Project is made possible through the support of our staff and volunteers who assist with packing, distribution, and meal delivery,” he continued. “We are grateful to our major sponsor, Walmart, along with additional support from AllSouth Federal Credit Union, Kroger, PepsiCo, Publix, and many individuals who made direct contributions.”
