On Saturday, May 31, 2025, the Columbia SC Branch NAACP president L. Oveta Glover, proudly stood with Allen University for the unveiling of a powerful and emotional memorial honoring the Emanuel Nine—nine innocent lives lost in the 2015 Charleston church shooting at Mother Emanuel AME Church. Held at the historic Good Samaritan-Waverly Hospital, now home to Allen’s Institute for Civility, the unveiling touched the hearts of all in attendance.

The ceremony featured poignant reflections from Mrs. Jennifer Pinckney, widow of Senator Clementa C. Pinckney, and their daughter, both of whom shared deeply moving words about faith, legacy, and love. Family members of the Emanuel Nine were also present and expressed sincere gratitude, stating that the experience brought back cherished

Oveta Glover memories of their loved ones. They shared how thankful they were that Allen University created such a lasting tribute in the name of education and historical remembrance.

Following the unveiling, attendees toured the newly restored building, which now houses the Institute for Civility, the School of Education,

the Dickerson-Green Theological Seminary, and the Waverly Wall Portrait Display.

President L. Oveta Glover of the Columbia SC Branch NAACP offered these words in reflection:

“The unveiling of the Emanuel Nine Memorial at Allen University is more than a moment of remembrance—it is a lasting lesson in courage, faith, and the unshakable pursuit of justice. We are grateful to President McNealey and the Allen University community for honoring these lives in a way that touches the soul and uplifts the cause of education and equity for generations to come.”

The Columbia SC Branch NAACP extends its deepest appreciation to President Ernest McNealey and his dedicated team for a memorial well done—one that not only preserves history but also uplifts our collective resolve to seek justice, equity, and peace.
