Movie honors trailblazing Booker T. Washington High School graduate
The Columbia (SC) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is proud to announce a private screening of the movie The Six Triple Eight on Friday, December 6, 2024, at 7:00 PM. This unique event will honor and educate the community about the only Women’s Army Corps unit of color during World War II. The screening will take place at Spotlight Cinemas Capital 8, 201 Columbia Mall Boulevard, Columbia, SC 29223.
The Six Triple Eight recounts the inspiring and untold story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion. This remarkable unit of 855 women tackled a monumental task: clearing a three-year backlog of 17 million pieces of undelivered mail for American soldiers overseas. Amid discrimination and the challenges of a foreign, war-torn land, these courageous women delivered hope and morale to soldiers on the front lines.
The role of Lt. Col. Charity Adams-Earley, a pioneering figure in this battalion, is portrayed by the talented award-winning actress Kerry Washington.
Lt. Col. Charity Adams-Earley, a native of Columbia, South Carolina, was an extraordinary leader and trailblazer. A graduate and valedictorian of Booker T. Washington High School’s Class of 1934, and later became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. In 1940, Adams became one of fifteen charter members of the Beta Beta Sigma Chapter (later Columbia (SC) Alumnae) under the guidance of Southern Regional Director Minerva
Johnson, serving as the first chapter president from 1940- 1942. Lt. Col. Adams-Earley’s journey—from her early days in Columbia to becoming the highest-ranking Black woman officer during World War II— stands as a testament to her resilience and excellence.
Tickets for this historic event are $10.00 per person. To purchase tickets, please contact the Arts and Letters Committee of the Columbia (SC) Alumnae Chapter by emailing cacdstartsandletters@columbiascdelta.com.
