Cleaves Memorial CME Church originated in the early 1900’s by a group of Baptists and Methodists in the neighborhood now known as Booker Washington Heights. The pastor and members celebrated their 116th Church Anniversary on Sunday, November 9, at 2:00pm. It was a joyous occasion that was highly anticipated for many months.
The speaker for the day was Rev. Dr. Robert T. Benton, pastor of Antioch AMEZ Church of Eastover, SC, whose members strongly supported him by showing up in impressive numbers.
Rev. B.T. Martin was the Worship Leader and also the chairperson of the Church Anniversary Committee. Prayer was by Cleaves Pastor Kennith Johnson, Sr. followed by the scripture by Exhorter Rico D. Williams. Everyone was warmly welcomed by Vickie Scott, the church history was read by Theresa C. Muldrow, and the Memorial was led by Dorothy Jackson. Musical selections were by the Cleaves Combined Choir,
Community CME Church, New Hope CME, and Antioch AMEZ. Dr. Benton’s sermon topic was: “The Church Is Still Standing.” The awesome anniversary book was compiled and created by Debra Caldwell.
Colors for the occasion were black and gold. The anniversary theme was: “We’re
Still Standing by the Grace of God.” A delicious meal was served in the Johnnie Smith
Fellowship Hall which was beautifully decorated in black and gold by Silenna Jackson.
