The 2024-2025 school year marks 75 years since C.A. Johnson High School opened its doors to students in 1949. C.A. Johnson is the last historically black high school in Columbia still in operation.
As part of the 75th anniversary celebration, C.A. Johnson alumni are invited to attend homecoming events at the school (2219 Barhamville Road, Columbia, SC 29204) September 20 and 21.
- Friday, September 20 – The school will hold a 75th anniversary homecoming mixer in the school’s atrium from 6 p.m. – 11 p.m. Tickets are $30.
C.A. Johnson alumni Charles F. Bolden, Jr. and Dr. Thaddeus Bell will serve as the event’s keynote speakers. Bolden is a former astronaut and former NASA Administrator who was appointed by then-President Barack Obama. Dr. Bell is a family practice physician in
Charleston. Both are members of the Richland One Hall of Fame.
During the event, the school will honor former NFL player and C.A. Johnson alumnus Mike Jones by hanging his jersey in the new gym. C.A. Johnson will also induct the members of the school’s 2025 Alumni Wall of Fame.
- Saturday, September 21 – The C.A. Johnson Hornets football team will face off against Allendale-Fairfax High School for its homecoming game at Bolden Stadium (2600 Barhamville Road, Columbia, SC 29204) at 12 p.m. Tickets are $8.
The school will hold a homecoming parade at 10 a.m. The parade will go from C.A. Johnson to Bolden Stadium.
Tailgating for the homecoming game will take place at the school starting at 9 a.m. Tailgating packages cost $150 and can be purchased
either online or in person at C.A. Johnson. The deadline to purchase a tailgating package is Thursday, September 19.
Two different 75th anniversary T-shirts are available for purchase. Each shirt costs $25.
You can also purchase a 75th anniversary homecoming experience bundle, which includes a ticket to the homecoming game, a ticket to the homecoming mixer, both 75th anniversary T-shirts, a homecoming arm band and a C.A. Johnson mask. The bundle costs $75.
