Abraham, Jr. to be awarded 2026 Drum Major Designation
On Saturday, January 17th, the Brookland Baptist Church Brotherhood in West Columbia, South Carolina will hold its annual MLK Birthday Celebration Breakfast. This event has been held over the past 20 years. In addition to a hearty breakfast and great fellowship, attendees are treated to a keynote speech. This year’s guest speaker is attorney, politician and CNN guest political commentator Bakari Sellers. Mr. Seller’s insightful and provocative commentary, especially in these turbulent times, will have the audience on the edge of their seats.
A standard segment of the annual program is the Brotherhood’s awarding of the Drum Major award. Often, The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s legacy is described as such, and he even preferred to be characterized as a drum major for justice. The Brotherhood bestows the award upon individuals who represent King’s legacy in some manner that positively impacts the community. This year’s recipient is Nathaniel Abraham, Jr. Mr. Abraham, publisher of this newspaper, has kept the “Dream” alive by continuing to present positive news to the African American community. While fulfilling his late father’s legacy, Nathaniel Abraham, Sr. who founded the newspaper 40 years ago, the Carolina Panorama continues to raise the profile of African American achievements and accomplishments
that would otherwise go unnoticed. Activities of local organizations, HBCUs and small businesses owned and operated by African Americans have historically been highlighted under the guidance of Mr. Abraham and staff.
In January 2022, Nathaniel launched the Low Country Panorama Newspaper in the Charleston metro area (Berkely, Charleston, & Dorchester counties). The news outlet was launched to fill the void left by the demise of Charleston’s previous African American oriented newspaper. In 2024, he launched the Upstate Panorama to serve readers of Spartanburg County.
Today, the newspapers are published weekly and has a distribution of 21,000 copies in over 400 outlets around the state.
Nathaniel is a 1987 graduate of the University of South Carolina, where he majored in history and minored in Business Management. Upon graduation, he joined the family business and is celebrating 38 years in
In April 2024, Nathaniel became the first African American elected to serve as President of the SC Press Association, which represents over 80 newspapers across the state of South Carolina. His professional associations include America’s newspapers, the Association of Community Publishers, the Local media Association and the SC Press Association
Nathaniel is married to Patricia King Abraham, and they are proud parents of three adult children, Nathaniel III, Briana and Amber.
