Benedict College shines at UA Hackathon

It was a winning weekend for Benedict College when a team of scholars finished 3rd during the 5th annual UA Innovate – Hackathon & Innovation Challenge at the University of Alabama.

Led by coaches, Alton Moseley and Dr. Melvin Miller, the team faced competition from schools during the 24-hour competition to design and implement a technology solution in a specific category.

Moseley says, “From an instructor’s perspective, supporting students in the UA Alabama Hackathon provides a valuable opportunity to reinforce classroom concepts through real-world, collaborative problem-solving. These experiences help prepare students for real-world careers.”

Team members of Cyber Security majors are Nikko Amos, sophomore, Stockbridge, Georgia; DaSani Gregory, freshmen, Chester, SC; Dylan Lacey, sophomore, Conway, SC and Ryan Taylor, junior, Brooklyn, NY.

Describing his experience, Taylor says, “Being surrounded by students who look like me, coding through the night, reminded me why representation matters.”

Gregory says, “Competing in Alabama pushed me out of my comfort zone. I met mentors, solved real problems, and saw what collaboration really looks like.”

Benedict competed against teams from Alabama A&M University, Lawson State Community College, Talladega College, Trenholm State Community College, Tuskegee University and The University of Alabama.
