Auntie Karen Legends Of… concert

Historic marker unveiled recognizing Eau Claire’s Lincoln Park

The Columbia Parks & Recreation Department unveiled a historic marker at Lincoln Park in the Eau Claire community on Tuesday, February 27.

Lincoln Park, which at one time featured an auditorium, outdoor theater, and pool, became a significant gathering and recreational location for Columbia’s African-American communities at the beginning of the 20th Century. Approximately 4,000 people gathered for the park’s formal opening in July of 1901.

nearby Hyatt Park. Railcars transported Black citizens to the park. The park’s decline began in 1903 when the city passed an ordinance prohibiting Blacks from purchasing lots around the park.
