Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity to host Oratorical Contest

The Omicron Iota Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. will host the Alfred F. Young Oratorical Contest on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 10 a.m. at The Meeting Place Church of Greater Columbia, 201 Columbia Mall Blvd, Columbia, SC.

This competition serves as the penultimate event for senior participants, known as “Beaus,” in the fraternity’s Alpha Academy program. Established in 2004, Alpha Academy is a mentoring initiative designed to support African American high school juniors and seniors in the Columbia metropolitan area. The program aligns with Alpha Phi Alpha’s national focus, “Go to High School– Go to College,” by providing enrichment opportunities beyond the traditional classroom setting. Participants engage in college preparation, leadership development, scholarship competitions, and career planning.

Since the early 1990s, the oratorical contest has provided students with a platform to refine their public speaking skills through original speeches on selected topics. In 2006, the event was renamed to honor Dr. Alfred F. Young, a founding member of Omicron Iota Lambda and an esteemed chemistry educator. Beaus will compete for a monetary scholarship, showcasing their ability to craft and deliver compelling arguments.

“The Alfred F. Young Oratorical Contest not only challenges students to think critically and speak confidently, but it also reinforces the values of leadership and academic excellence that Alpha Academy instills,” said Von Moore, Director of Educational Activities.

This event is open to the public, and the community is encouraged to attend. Media representatives are welcome and encouraged to cover this event. For media inquiries or to confirm attendance, please contact PJ Walker at pjwalker79@yahoo.com or 803-718-2224.
