Allen University proudly announces the return of Javon Milford as the University’s new Director of Bands. A distinguished percussionist, educator, and mentor, Milford brings a dynamic blend of collegiate teaching experience, performance excellence, and a deep commitment to student development as he returns to lead Allen’s band program into an exciting new era.

Milford is widely respected for his dedication to excellence in both music performance and education. Throughout his career, he has built strong percussion traditions while inspiring students at every level to pursue musical and personal growth through discipline, creativity, and leadership.
Prior to returning to Allen University, Milford served as Professor of Percussion Studies at Claflin University and South Carolina State University, where he taught applied percussion and directed percussion activities within each institution’s Department of Music. He also served as Director of Athletic Bands at Limestone University, leading marching and athletic band programs while continuing to expand collegiate percussion studies.
In addition to his work in higher education, Milford has an extensive background in public school music education. He has served as a high school percussion instructor, assistant band director, and clinician, helping guide multiple percussion ensembles to competitive success and state-level recognition. His teaching philosophy centers on strong fundamentals, musical discipline, and creative expression, preparing students for success both on and off the stage.
An accomplished performer, Milford has appeared with ensembles including the Colour of Music Festival Orchestra and the South Carolina Brass Band. He has also participated in nationally recognized events such as the Percussive Arts Society International Convention. Milford remains actively involved in the percussion community through his membership in the Percussive Arts Society, where he currently serves as Secretary for the South Carolina Chapter.
Milford is endorsed by several leading music industry brands, including Pearl/Adams, Vic Firth, Zildjian, Grover Pro, and Remo.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Percussion Performance and a Master of Arts degree in Music Education and is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Music Education.
