Family caregiving can bring moments of love, laughter, uncertainty and difficult decisions. On Saturday, Aug. 22, AARP South Carolina will bring those experiences to the stage with Mama’s Girls, a caregiving-focused play designed to encourage families to talk about the roles we may take on when someone we love needs care.
The free event will take place from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Richland School District Two Performing Arts Center, 763A Fashion Drive in Columbia. Registration is required.
Through storytelling and humor, Mama’s Girls explores the different dynamics that can emerge within families as caregiving needs change. The play reflects a reality many families recognize: Sometimes care becomes a family effort, and sometimes families need information, resources or support beyond what they can provide on their own.
“Caregiving touches so many families, but we don’t always talk about what it really looks and feels like until we’re in the middle of it. Mama’s Girls gives us a chance to see those family dynamics reflected onstage with humor and heart, while reminding people that it’s OK to ask for help, have the hard conversations and use the resources available to them. The event is intended to help make conversations about caregiving easier to begin. Attendees can learn about AARP caregiving resources and connect with community organizations offering information that may help families before, during and after a caregiving journey.
Before the performance, guests can enjoy light bites and refreshments, take photos at photo booths and participate in interactive activities. AARP South Carolina and community organizations will also be available to share caregiving information and resources.
“Mama’s Girls” offers an uplifting look at a subject that can be complicated. By showing different family roles, relationships and challenges onstage, the production encourages audiences to reflect on their own families and consider how communication and planning can help when caregiving needs arise.
