The Palmetto State Barbers Association hosted its 65th Annual Convention at the Drury Plaza Hotel in North Charleston, South Carolina— an inspiring weekend filled with celebration, education, and powerful moments of recognition.
The highlighted moment of the convention was the 65th Annual Awards Banquet, held on Sunday, where the Association honored dedicated barbers, community leaders, and industry professionals for their impactful service and contributions to the barbering profession and surrounding communities.
Serving as Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Mr. Henry Ravenel Jr., Chairman & CEO of the Southeastern Chamber of Commerce and founder of the Charleston Black Caucus. Mr. Ravenel was also recognized and honored by the Association for his dedicated leadership, service, and commitment to uplifting communities and advancing professional excellence.
Mayor Reggie Burgess
of North Charleston delivered the evening’s keynote address, sharing a heartfelt and empowering message. He was also honored by the Association for his genuine commitment, love for the community, and continued support of the barbering profession.
Among the most prestigious recognitions:
The late Mrs. Catherine Kelly, a devoted and beloved PSBA member until her transition in 2024, was remembered with honor and love. Her daughter was presented with a framed white barber coat, symbolizing her mother’s years of service, dedication, and impact within the Association and the barbering industry.
Mr. Herbert Bell, a loyal PSBA member for over 60 years, received the Palmetto State Barbers Association Hall of Fame Gold Jacket in recognition of his labor, hard work, and long-standing commitment to the barbering profession and the Association.
Mr. Antonio L. Rivers Sr. was awarded the F.L.
Ellison Award, the highest honor given by the Palmetto State Barbers Association. Named after the Association’s founder, the award was presented in recognition of Mr. Rivers’ exceptional labor, community advocacy, leadership in the barbering industry, and impact as a businessman and mentor.
Mr. Arties Thrower Sr. received the Barber of the Year Award, honoring his dedication, service, and excellence in the barbering profession.
Mrs. Tierra Rivers was presented with the first-ever Palmetto State Barbers Association Cosmetology Award, recognizing her outstanding service in the cosmetology industry, her contributions to the community, and her commitment to helping others through education, wellness, and beauty.

Student and professional barber competitions at the Jeanene Batten Community Center, highlighting technical excellence and creative vision.

Educational classes and workshops focused on how to become an instructor, man weave application, business and financial planning, and insurance education.

The Statewide Student Barber Graduation Ceremony, held Monday, celebrated the achievements of student barbers who successfully completed their programs and are preparing to take the next step in their careers.
In addition to the major awards, the Association presented the Community Spotlight Award and the Community Impact Award to community advocates, leaders, and partners who serve those in need—such as feeding the hungry, helping homeless veterans, and making meaningful change across South Carolina.
The 65th Annual Convention powerfully reflected the Palmetto State Barbers Association’s continued mission: to honor its legacy, elevate its members, and empower the next generation of leaders in barbering, cosmetology, and community service.
