In 1993, Queen Latifah released a song entitled “U.N.I.T.Y.” The song talked about how women should respect themselves and demand that men also treat them with respect. The chorus of the song repeatedly told women “You gotta let them know, that you aren’t a B—- or a H-.”
Apparently, Queen Latifah’s song is completely lost on too many members of the younger generation. Last weekend, I was shopping in a grocery story when two 20-something young “ladies” entered. One of them was having a rather loud phone conversation with someone I assumed was a male acquaintance. She was telling the dude that he should “treat all his h—- the same. You took one of your other b—— to the fair, and you didn’t take me.” Apparently, she considered this to be disrespectful.
Queen Latifah spent three decades trying to convince young women to treat themselves with respect and demand it from others. Instead of listening, too many young women today disrespect themselves and refer to themselves and other women as b—— and h—. You can’t expect other people to treat you with respect if you don’t respect yourself.
